High bioavailability, purity and reduced dosage

 

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients that are important for overall health and wellness. They offer great health benefits, including reducing inflammation, improving heart health, and supporting brain function. There are two main forms of omega-3 fatty acids that are commonly found in fish oil based supplements: Ethyl Ester (EE) and Triglyceride (TG) forms.
The primary difference between omega-3 EE and TG forms lies in The chemical structure of their nucleus.

In the EE form, the nucleus is chemically modified to create an ethyl ester, which allows to enrich it with EPA/DHA in the required proportions and purify them. Unfortunately the downside is that they have a low availability and oxidise fasts.

In contrast, the TG form is the natural form of omega 3, this is how it is found in fish and this is how we store and use it in our bodies. Its bioavailability is excellent. However, natural fish oils are not very concentrated in EPA/DHA and they contain impurities.
As a consequence; to have the right dose of fatty acids, it is necessary to take a large dose of oil (and its impurities), which can affect digestion and intestinal transit.

A solution is to transform these TG oils into EE, this process is called transesterification. To put it simply, EPA/DHA is separated from its glycerol support, purified and recombined with an alcohol (ethanol). Through this chemical manipulation, we obtain purified fatty acids that can be concentrated in EPA/ DHA as desired.

However, an important downside is that EE oil oxidises more quickly. Moreover, as this is a new form that does not exist in nature, our body has, unfortunately, high difficulty assimilating it as it doesn’t have the enzymes necessary to separate EPA and DHA from its ethanol support. Some studies show that the absorption of a TG vs EE oil ranges from 71% to 400%…

Another option, which is costly because it involves a long and complicated process, is to take the EE oil and separate it from its ethanol support, and recombine it in TG form by adding glycerol.
As a result, we have the best of both worlds: a purified oil with a high concentration of EPA DHA .
Moreover, this oil has also a better resistance to oxidation thanks to a specific airless encapsulating method.
It means that thanks to this specific transformation process, this oil is highly concentrated in EPA and DHA, and because it has a low oxidation, you can ingest small doses (in the form of small soft gel capsules (while most products are hard and large capsules), achieve a high bioavailability and enjoy its health benefits.

How do you know if your oil is in TG or EE oil?

If TG is indicated on the packaging, it means that it is in the triglyceride form, however if it is not indicated the oil is an EE form.

Controlled release offers a unique differentiation when it comes to supplementation. It allows the diffusion of the active ingredients either at a specific time and/or during a specific length of time. This is very beneficial depending on the area of the body and the function we are targeting.

Laboratoires Activa supplements use the microgranule technology that offers 3 types of controlled release:
– Immediate release
– Extended release
– Delayed release

The microgranule technology enables the protection of the actives thanks to a semi-permeable outer membrane designed to protect the ingredients from gastric acidity and dissolve according to the targeted action.

– Immediate Release –

80% of the actives are released over a period of 45 minutes.  The active ingredients in the microgranules are rapidly released for the body to use them immediately.

– Delayed Release –

Delayed release is used for formulations that require very specific release at a targeted time/area such as pre- and probiotics. As they require gastro-protection they will be released after passing through the stomach.

– Extended Release –

With an extended release control we are able to cover an 8-hour period over which the active ingredients are delivered to the body. This is particularly useful and effective to address conditions that require a prolonged action such sleep; helping the user to fall asleep but also avoiding night awakening. The same way it is used in formulations that support blood circulation over a long period of time, or for joint pain, maintaining a regular release of the anti-inflammatory compounds along the day.
Our extended release capsules contain 50% of the microgranules in immediate release, for rapid relief, and 50% in extended release.

The quality of active ingredients is the most important criteria for your selection of supplements

When choosing a natural supplement the form plays a primary role: capsules, tablets, powders, liquids or microgranules?
Meanwhile, the quality of the ingredients it contains and more particularly the active ingredients are even more important.

First of all, ingredients should be of natural source, with no coloring agent, GMO, pesticide and preservative free.

Secondly, the content in a product of a specific plant or fruit doesn’t guarantee its efficiency. For most of them, what is important is the content of the active ingredients: the part of the ingredient that is active and known to have a beneficial action in the body.

For example, what is of interest in the red vine is its content in flavonoids – a polyphenolic compound known to support the circulatory system, the same way you should look for the content of 10HDA in a royal jelly product, this content guarantees a quality royal jelly when it is higher than 1.6%.

The content of active ingredients is not constant from one plant harvest to another, i.e. 10 kgs of oranges from 2 different harvests may not contain the same quantity of Vitamin C. For this reason, using extracts that are titrated, gives a guarantee that the content of active ingredients will be constant from one product to the next.

Active ingredients are extracted using a specific hydro alcoholic process – some actives are soluble in water and others in alcohol – followed by nebulization and only the active part of the plant is used. In the case of micro granules, the active ingredient is extracted via a process of evaporation and nebulization.

In many supplement manufacturing processes, the whole dried plant is used (with no guarantee of active content), it is grinded and is often mixed with other neutral agents to form a powder (such as maltodextrin). This considerably reduces the plant content, not to mention the percentage of active ingredients. With the grinding technique, we often find a lot of plant wastage, such as stems or roots.

So what is important to remember is that a plant may be known for these properties, but it is actually all of its active ingredients that determines the action sought.
